Valve has officially unveiled its new wireless VR headset, the Steam Frame, the latest successor to the Valve Index. This versatile device supports both VR and non-VR gaming, offering two distinct operational modes: streaming and standalone. To date, over a hundred games have achieved official certification for standalone play.
The Steam Frame is designed with modularity in mind. The front optical module weighs a mere 185 grams, while the entire unit tips the scales at approximately 440 grams. It features dual LCD screens, each boasting a resolution of 2160×2160. Powering this advanced display is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip, complemented by 16GB of LPDDR5X memory. The headset supports refresh rates ranging from 72Hz to 120Hz, with an experimental mode pushing the limits to 144Hz. Additionally, it is equipped with Wi-Fi 7 connectivity for seamless streaming.
The Steam Frame is available in two storage variants: a 256GB model priced at approximately 7,112 yuan and a 1TB model retailing for around 8,724 yuan. Due to high demand, purchases are subject to a reservation lottery system. Interested buyers can register until 10 AM Pacific Time on September 17. Lottery results will be announced via email on the same day, with successful applicants receiving their purchase eligibility emails the following day. Those placed on the waitlist will need to patiently await restock notifications.
Official accessories for the Steam Frame include a 45W power supply kit, an ergonomic accessory pack, and a replacement accessory pack. However, these can only be added to the order during checkout by users who have secured purchase eligibility through the lottery. Additionally, each device comes bundled with a redemption code for Half-Life: Alyx, though this offer is not valid for users who already own the game.
