During the early stages of development, Apple’s inaugural spatial computing device, the Vision Pro, was internally referred to by the codename ‘Reality Pro’. Prototype collector Kosutami recently disclosed on the social platform X that Apple initially intended to name the headset the ‘Apple Reality Pro’. To substantiate the name’s widespread usage during development, Kosutami exhibited internal strings that included ‘realityprorealityosdev’. The Vision Pro was officially unveiled at WWDC23 on June 6, 2023. It boasts a dual-chip architecture, integrating both M2 and R1 chips, along with 15 optical modules, dual 4K micro-OLED displays (aggregating 23 million pixels), Wi-Fi 6E wireless connectivity, and built-in eye-tracking, gesture control, and spatial audio technologies.

The core innovation of the device lies in its ability to facilitate spatial computing through the VisionOS operating system, empowering users to interact with the device using gestures, eye movements, or voice commands. It supports AR, VR, and MR mixed reality modes, enabling developers to craft immersive 3D content without boundaries. The original name of the device underwent a change due to trademark conflicts—Huawei had already registered the ‘Vision Pro’ trademark in 2019 (International Class 9, encompassing head-mounted virtual reality devices), compelling Apple to rebrand it for markets such as China. Eventually, the ‘Vision Pro’ moniker was adopted worldwide.
