On August 6, independent tech journalist Tim Culpan reported that the release of Apple’s iPhone 18 series and the foldable iPhone Ultra is imminent, with the launch expected in just a few weeks. TSMC’s A20 Pro processors, fabricated using the advanced N2 process, have achieved impressive wafer yield rates and boast ample production capacity. However, a scarcity of DRAM memory has caused a bottleneck: the finished processor wafers are unable to move forward to the packaging stage. This has resulted in an inventory buildup, placing significant pressure on Apple and its supply chain as they prepare their stock levels.
At present, Apple is actively pursuing additional mobile DRAM chip supplies, primarily from its key supplier, Micron Technology. The company is also sourcing DRAM from SK Hynix and Samsung to meet demand. Tim Culpan emphasized that TSMC’s N2 process itself is not a limiting factor for iPhone shipments, as production of the A20 Pro processors is largely complete and ready for assembly.
