A research team from the University of California San Diego has developed a smart ring capable of continuously monitoring multiple chemical biomarkers in finger sweat in real time, including glucose, ketones, vitamin C, uric acid, lactic acid, and alcohol. The ring integrates sensing technology, low-power electronics, and a flexible battery, powered by a flexible zinc-silver oxide rechargeable battery that can sustain operation for 12 hours on a single charge. Its outer casing is made of 3D-printed polymer, which passively absorbs sweat through a permeable hydrogel. It analyzes sweat composition using an electrochemical sensor array and wirelessly transmits the data to a smartphone application. This technology is expected to play a role in areas such as diabetes management and nutritional tracking, with relevant research published in the journal Nature Communications.
