French Startup Unveils Miniature Sonar-Guided Drone to Combat Mosquitoes Mid-Air

When it comes to mosquitoes—the creatures responsible for the highest number of human deaths worldwide—startups are stepping up with innovative tech solutions, launching what can be described as a high-tech "aerial interception battle." Tornyol, a French startup backed by Y Combinator, has unveiled a fully automated mosquito-killing drone, weighing a mere 40 grams. This drone employs ultrasonic sonar and Doppler shift identification technology, effectively mimicking bats' natural ability to "locate prey by sound." It identifies targets by analyzing the unique wing-beat frequencies of insects, ensuring that beneficial insects are not accidentally harmed in the process.

Once a target is detected, the drone swoops in at high speed, colliding directly with the mosquito and shredding it with its rapidly spinning propellers. A single unit can intercept targets from distances of up to 8 meters and can patrol an area of approximately 2 hectares at its maximum capacity. However, constrained by its lightweight design of just 40 grams, each flight lasts only about 3 minutes. Afterward, the drone automatically returns to its base station to recharge, a process that takes roughly 30 minutes.

Tornyol claims that, in theory, their drone could reduce mosquito control costs up to 100 times more efficiently than current methods, with the ultimate ambition of "completely eradicating mosquitoes" from areas inhabited by humans. At present, the prototype drone is priced at $1,100, or it can be acquired through a monthly subscription plan costing $50. As mass production ramps up, costs are anticipated to decrease even further.

Currently, the testing phase focuses on moths, with plans to shift the focus to mosquitoes in the near future, although no specific timeline has been disclosed yet.
