A Google Android team engineer announced through a tweet that Android 17 has introduced stricter limits on the number of unlock password attempts. This measure is designed to thwart thieves or unauthorized individuals who might try to unlock devices by systematically entering different PIN codes. The enhanced restrictions make brute-force attacks significantly more challenging, thereby bolstering device security. At the same time, Google is mindful of maintaining a balance in user experience, considering scenarios where users may forget their passwords.

The anti-theft enhancements in Android 17 also encompass the following features: Once Lost Mode is activated, users are required to use biometric authentication (such as fingerprint or facial recognition) to reunlock the device, even if the correct PIN code is known. The system automatically conceals quick settings to minimize opportunities for thieves to swiftly disable critical functions. It also disables new Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections to prevent the interruption of location tracking. Additionally, it restricts the number of PIN or password attempts and increases the waiting period after consecutive incorrect attempts.
