On June 30, 2026, the UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) proposed new measures that would allow app developers to direct users to payment channels outside of Apple's App Store and Google Play Store, aiming to reduce fees and foster market competition. Currently, Apple prohibits such redirection, while Google also imposes restrictions. The new proposal mandates that if businesses impose fees for this, they must be fair, reasonable, and lower than existing app store commissions, with any savings passed on to consumers or invested in innovation. Additionally, the CMA is considering requiring Apple to open up Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, enabling developers to offer contactless payment services within iOS apps. Google has already expressed support and begun implementing relevant changes; Apple has not yet responded.
