Recently, the Illinois state legislature in the United States has approved an amendment to its traffic regulations, specifically designating smart glasses as prohibited electronic devices for drivers. This proposed legislation has now been forwarded to the governor for his signature. Upon enactment, Illinois will pioneer as the first state in the U.S. to explicitly prohibit the wearing of smart glasses while operating a vehicle. The bill does not differentiate among various types of smart glasses or their usage scenarios; their use is entirely banned while driving, including when the vehicle is stationary or in neutral gear. The penalty for a first-time violation will be a $75 fine, which will double for subsequent offenses. Additionally, severe penalties will be imposed in cases where the use of smart glasses leads to serious accidents, aligning with existing traffic safety regulations.
