On Tuesday (local time), Google unveiled a groundbreaking 'Fake Call Detection' feature for Android, designed to counter the escalating menace of AI voice cloning scams. This pioneering tool, the first of its kind in the industry, is capable of identifying and alerting users to potential fake calls originating from contacts, provided both the user and the contact listed in the address book utilize Google's Phone app. The feature is automatically enabled and runs silently in the background, leveraging real-time, unobtrusive verification signals exchanged between the two devices to confirm the legitimacy of incoming calls. Privacy is safeguarded through end-to-end encrypted RCS technology. Should any irregularities be detected, a pop-up alert will surface on the user's screen, advising them to terminate the call. Commencing this month, the feature will be globally deployed to devices running Android 12 and later versions, initially supporting the Google Pixel series. Given that Google's Phone app serves as the default dialer on most Android devices, the majority of users will have immediate access to this functionality. Furthermore, built upon the open standard RCS framework, this innovation holds the potential for adoption by other apps and device manufacturers in the future, thereby bolstering the industry's collective defense against scams.
