At the 2026 Google I/O Developer Conference, XREAL unveiled its innovative Project Aura smart glasses, which are built on the Android XR system, and confirmed that these cutting-edge glasses will be available to consumers by the end of 2026. The standout feature of these smart glasses is their external computing module design, with the entire device tipping the scales at less than 90 grams. The external module can be conveniently clipped onto a pocket and serves a dual purpose: it acts as both a battery pack and a physical touchpad. The frame of the glasses is outfitted with three outward-facing cameras that enable gesture recognition. In terms of hardware, the glasses are powered by XREAL's proprietary X1S spatial computing chip, coupled with a processor from the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR platform. This combination ensures exceptional gesture tracking performance, with a claimed recognition range that surpasses that of Galaxy XR. Users can interact with the glasses through hand movements and pinching gestures. Running on Google's Android XR system, the glasses provide seamless access to spatial applications. A live demonstration showcased immersive 3D navigation using Google Maps and the playback of virtual reality content on YouTube. The current iteration of the glasses offers approximately 4 hours of battery life on a full charge. However, it's worth noting that the software is not yet fully optimized, and some features are not yet operating at 100% capacity. As a result, battery life may vary. Additionally, the glasses incorporate multimodal Gemini AI. When connected to a computer via the native DisplayPort, this AI can automatically transform traditional 2D applications, legacy mobile software, and standard video content into floating 3D windows, enhancing the user experience.
