Yesterday, Apple rolled out the iOS 26.5 system update, unveiling a new functionality dubbed 'Suggested Places' within its Maps application. This strategic move is widely perceived as a preparatory measure for the forthcoming integration of advertising into Apple's mapping service. Despite previous rumors suggesting that advertisements had already been activated within the app, Apple Maps has not, as of yet, displayed any real advertisements. The 'Suggested Places' feature intelligently recommends locations based on the user's current position and search history. Initially, advertising slots will be exclusively allocated at the pinnacle of search results and within the 'Suggested Places' segment. Advertisements will be distinctly marked with an 'Ad' label to ensure transparency. Moreover, user data will remain unlinked from Apple Accounts and will not be gathered, stored, or disseminated to any third parties. Apple has announced its intention to formally initiate map advertising in the United States and Canada this summer.
