This month, on the 12th, 45-year-old visually impaired artist Clark Reynolds will don Meta smart glasses and take on the 42.2-kilometer Brighton Marathon in the UK entirely on his own. Guided by remote voice instructions from volunteers around the globe, he aims to become the first visually impaired individual to finish a full marathon relying solely on virtual guidance, without the physical presence of running companions. Clark has grappled with hereditary retinitis pigmentosa since childhood and, in the past, depended on physical running partners for his runs—a situation that left him feeling constrained. This endeavor adopts a virtual running partner model that combines “smart glasses + volunteer network”. In this setup, volunteers access real-time footage of the road conditions captured by the smart glasses via the Be My Eyes app and provide Clark with verbal guidance. The marathon course is intricate, presenting challenges for both Clark and the volunteers. To ensure his safety, professional guides are also stationed on-site as a contingency measure.
