The protracted four-year scandal surrounding the performance throttling of Samsung's Galaxy S22 series has finally reached its conclusion. The Seoul High Court in South Korea has handed down a verdict, mandating that Samsung Electronics provide compensation to the affected consumers. The controversy first erupted in March 2022, when a substantial number of South Korean consumers initiated a class-action lawsuit against Samsung. They alleged that the pre-installed Game Optimizing Service (GOS) was intentionally limiting the phone's performance, thereby compromising the overall user experience. Although GOS was introduced with the intention of preventing overheating, it did so by forcibly reducing the GPU frequency and screen resolution, and this feature could not be manually disabled in the initial software release. The Galaxy S22 series, which was powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen1 processor, experienced a significant reduction in GPU performance due to this throttling. Ultimately, the court ruled in favor of the consumers, ordering Samsung to compensate the 1,882 plaintiffs involved in the lawsuit. As neither party contested the ruling, this marked the official resolution of this legal battle over performance rights.
