On March 19, as reported by the technology website TechCrunch, Pete Lau, the co-founder of OnePlus and CEO of Nothing, unveiled a forward-looking vision for the post-iPhone era at the South by Southwest conference. He posited that future devices will be powered by AI agents, which will take the place of traditional applications. Lau is of the opinion that the current app-centric interaction model has hit a plateau. He believes that AI will pave the way for proactive services by discerning user intentions. For instance, when a user expresses a desire to "grab a coffee," the device can seamlessly integrate communication, mapping, ride-hailing, and other apps to fulfill the request, eliminating the need for manual app-switching. Lau underscored that future operating systems will pivot towards interfaces tailored for AI agents, rather than those designed for human operation. Although Nothing's operating system currently accommodates user-defined mini-programs, Lau foresees that, in the long haul, apps will fade into the background, serving as resource modules summoned by AI. This vision has already borne fruit, as it played a pivotal role in Nothing's securing of $200 million in Series C funding in 2025.
