On February 27, International Data Corporation (IDC) stated that due to a shortage of storage chips, the global smartphone market is set to shrink by 12.9% in 2026, facing an “unprecedented crisis.” IDC projects that global smartphone shipments will reach approximately 1.1 billion units in 2026, down from 1.26 billion units the previous year, erasing years of growth momentum. To cope with rising component costs, smartphone manufacturers are reducing specifications, canceling entry-level models, and steering consumers toward high-end devices. Nabila Popal, senior research director at IDC, anticipates that the situation will not ease until at least mid-2027.
