Despite Samsung's status as a global powerhouse in memory chips, its mobile phone division didn't get any preferential treatment amidst the memory price surge in 2026. According to recent reports, Samsung's newly launched Galaxy S26 series has adopted an unusual memory sourcing strategy: for the initial production run, roughly 50% of the units will not utilize memory from Samsung's own DS (Device Solutions) division. Instead, they will feature Micron's LPDDR5X chips. This decision stems from a severe global shortage of DRAM supply and the commercial strategy of Samsung's DS division, which has set a price hike of around 100% for LPDDR5X memory. The DS division prefers to allocate its production capacity to Apple, a customer willing to pay a substantial premium, compelling Samsung's mobile division to turn to Micron to bridge the supply shortfall.
