In 2023, storage giant Western Digital announced its strategic decision to split into two separate entities. One of these new companies will retain the Western Digital name and continue its focus on the research, development, and production of mechanical hard drives. Meanwhile, the other company, which will oversee the solid-state storage business, will operate under the SanDisk brand—a name that Western Digital had previously acquired. Despite this corporate restructuring, SanDisk's consumer-grade solid-state drives initially retained the familiar Western Digital branding, such as Red, Black, Blue, and Green disks. However, two years down the line, SanDisk has made a significant move by introducing its new retail brand, SanDisk Optimus, which is set to replace the previous Western Digital branding for its consumer-grade SSDs.
