Based on sources referenced by U.S. media outlets, Tencent and Apple have finalized a deal. Under this agreement, Apple will manage payment processing for WeChat mini-games and in-app purchases, receiving a 15% commission in return. The negotiation process between the two tech giants spanned more than a year.
This newly established agreement not only paves the way for an additional revenue avenue for Apple but also alleviates some of the financial and regulatory burdens on Tencent. Earlier, Apple had pressed Tencent to address a loophole that enabled developers to direct users to external payment channels, thereby bypassing Apple's standard 30% commission fee on in-app purchases. In recent times, Apple has implemented strategies across various regions to either lower in-app purchase fees or introduce alternative payment processing options.
