According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, Apple is developing a range of new satellite connectivity features for the iPhone, aiming to expand customer connection options beyond traditional mobile carriers. These new features include: opening satellite connectivity APIs for third-party app use; supporting offline use of Apple Maps via satellite; adding photo transfer capabilities to satellite messages; supporting a 'natural use' mode that allows connection to satellites without manual device adjustments; and enhancing 5G capabilities using satellite links to expand coverage. Internally at Apple, there were discussions about launching its own satellite service, but some executives believed Apple should not play the role of a telecommunications operator, so this possibility was rejected.
