The Apple iPhone Air is now open for pre-orders. As China's first domestically available phone equipped with eSIM technology, it boasts a sleek design with no physical SIM card slot, measuring a mere 5.6mm in thickness and weighing just 165g. Presently, all three major carriers in China—China Unicom, China Telecom, and China Mobile—offer eSIM services for this device. However, activating the eSIM necessitates a visit to a carrier store with your ID card and phone, and the process of writing the eSIM data typically takes around 5 minutes. At present, transferring eSIM services across provinces is not supported. Once activated, the physical SIM card will be promptly deactivated. However, if you wish to switch back from eSIM to a physical SIM card, a processing fee will be incurred. Moreover, the domestic version of the iPhone Air only accommodates two eSIM cards. For international travel, the domestic eSIM card must be removed, and upon returning to China, reactivation at a carrier store is necessary. Despite the convenience eSIM technology offers, its broader adoption in China still encounters certain hurdles.
