As reported by the Financial Times, the UK government is persisting in its attempts to gain access to Apple's encrypted iCloud data. In September 2025, the UK Home Office once more issued a confidential directive to Apple. This directive mandated the tech giant to set up a system enabling UK officials to access the encrypted cloud backups of British citizens. Previously, under the Investigatory Powers Act, the UK Home Office had already served Apple with a technical capability notice. This notice compelled Apple to grant access to the iCloud data of users worldwide, encompassing cloud - backup content like messages and passwords. In February, Apple took the step of suspending the availability of advanced data protection features for UK users. By doing so, it removed the end - to - end encryption for iCloud backup data. However, it stopped short of directly creating a backdoor. Apple has consistently stressed that it will never create a backdoor for any of its products. The company also voiced concerns that this particular action could undermine user security. The case is set to go to trial in early 2026.
