A report from a market research firm reveals that global smartphone sales witnessed a 5% year-on-year increase in the second quarter of 2025. Among the various operating systems, Google's Android claimed a 79% share, which, however, represents its lowest second-quarter market share in recent years. The intensifying competition in the Chinese smartphone market and the trend of premiumization in the Indian market have been the main drivers behind Android's diminishing market presence. Meanwhile, Apple's iOS system secured a 17% share, performing exceptionally well in key markets like India, the Middle East, and Brazil. It also maintained robust growth momentum in both the US and Chinese markets. Huawei's HarmonyOS accounted for 4% of the market share, demonstrating consistent growth within the Chinese market. Notably, it has outpaced iOS for six consecutive quarters, solidifying its status as the second-largest smartphone operating system in China. This achievement can be largely attributed to the success of Huawei's Nova series and the Pura X foldable smartphones, which have significantly bolstered the brand's competitive edge.
