The Alliance for Open Media (AOM) has revealed that the AV2 video codec, a significant leap forward in video encoding technology, is poised for its official launch by the end of this year. Serving as an advanced iteration of the AV1 standard, AV2 will lay the groundwork for the alliance's future technological endeavors. When compared to its predecessor, AV1, AV2 demonstrates markedly improved compression capabilities and includes a host of refined features, notably supporting AR/VR applications.
In celebration of the alliance's 10th anniversary, survey findings from new members were unveiled, indicating that 88% of these members regard AV1 as either crucial or highly important for their product development strategies. Furthermore, the 'Use Case Showcase Platform' underscores the tangible advantages of implementing AV1. Additionally, 53% of the members intend to integrate the AV2 standard into their operations within 12 months of its final specification release, with 88% anticipating full deployment within the upcoming two years.
