On September 10, 2025, Apple unveiled a groundbreaking security feature—Memory Integrity Enforcement (MIE)—for four iPhone models: the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and iPhone Air. Drawing on Arm's Memory Tagging Extension (MTE) technology, MIE has been refined into an Enhanced Memory Tagging Extension (EMTE). This innovation works by assigning covert tags to every memory block and then cross-checking these tags during hardware access. Such a mechanism effectively thwarts spyware attacks that exploit memory corruption vulnerabilities. The core objective of MIE is to elevate the bar for potential attackers and diminish the reliability of their attacks, a move that holds immense significance for high-risk individuals, including journalists, dissidents, and corporate leaders.
