Recently, Joby Aviation made a strategic move by acquiring Blade Air Mobility's urban helicopter rental business for a hefty sum of US$125 million. The core objective behind this acquisition is to phase out traditional, noisy, and less eco - friendly helicopters, and instead, usher in a new era of transportation with its quieter and more environmentally sustainable electric vertical take - off and landing aircraft (eVTOL).
Currently, Joby is in the process of awaiting certification from the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). While navigating through this regulatory phase, it has forged a partnership with Uber. The plan is to seamlessly integrate Blade's helicopter rental service into the Uber app as early as 2026. Once this integration is complete, users will be able to effortlessly book helicopter travel services with just a few taps on the Uber app, making air travel more accessible and convenient right from their fingertips.
