Effective June 28, Shanghai Metro will extend its pilot program to allow passengers to use bank cards (encompassing major international cards) and digital RMB hard wallets for gate access throughout the entire rail transit system, inclusive of regional lines. This initiative aims to streamline the travel experience for incoming passengers to Shanghai and bolster payment convenience. Passengers in possession of mainstream chip-based contactless payment cards, such as UnionPay, Visa, Mastercard, or compliant digital RMB hard wallets, will be able to swiftly pass through turnstiles at all stations across the network. Prior to use, please ensure that the card's small-amount password-free payment function is activated and that the card balance is sufficient.
