On June 8, a report by The Washington Post revealed that in the wake of the escalating dispute between President Trump and Elon Musk, representatives from NASA and the Pentagon have reached out to SpaceX's competitors, including Rocket Lab, Stoke Space, and Blue Origin, urging them to expedite the development of alternative rockets and spacecraft. The report highlighted that government officials have made contact with these three companies to inquire about the current status of their rockets and the timelines for their potential use in government missions.
Previously, Musk had threatened to halt flights of the Dragon spacecraft, a move that would have left NASA unable to arrange for astronaut transportation to and from the International Space Station. While Musk subsequently retracted this threat, his statement had raised concerns within NASA and the Pentagon, given NASA's reliance on SpaceX for astronaut safety and the Pentagon's heavy dependence on the company for launching critical satellites.
