Under intense light fields, electrons in graphene can traverse the bandgap with high probability and transition between energy bands. Scientists from the University of Regensburg, the University of Marburg, and the Jülich Research Center in Germany combined lasers with electron microscopy technology to track this ultrafast quantum process in real time for the first time, finding that the tunneling probability can reach as high as 100%. The research was published in Nature.
