Australian design software company Canva has announced a major organizational restructuring that will affect 1,271 employees—22% of its total workforce. CEO Melanie Perkins said the company has experienced its first growth slowdown in nearly a decade, and that its existing structure struggles to support its next phase of development, making restructuring necessary to improve efficiency. The adjustment will merge the product, growth, and platform teams into a unified product organization, streamline management layers, consolidate overlapping responsibilities, and create smaller teams with greater decision-making authority. The company also plans to relocate more product teams to its Sydney headquarters, with some employees required to move. Departing employees will receive at least six months' salary, one year of health insurance, job-search support, a one-year LinkedIn Premium membership, and may keep their company-issued MacBooks. Perkins said the change is not simply layoffs but a reconfiguration of organizational capabilities to respond to technological shifts, though she did not explicitly cite AI as a direct cause of the restructuring. Canva disclosed last year that it had 260 million monthly active users and $3.5 billion in revenue, and has achieved free cash flow profitability. Recently, another Australian tech company, Atlassian, also announced layoff plans—a sign that tech companies are rethinking their organizational structures and resource allocation.
