Ben Edgington, the coordinator for Ethereum's fast finality research direction, along with several researchers, has jointly submitted a draft aimed at reducing the waiting time for transaction finality from approximately 16 minutes to about 4 minutes, improving efficiency by about four times. Currently, their goal is to advance this draft into the formal upgrade proposal process. The core strategy of the draft is to split the combined mechanism of block selection and finality determination originally used by validators, in order to accelerate the finality process and facilitate future replacement of quantum-resistant signatures. Faster finality is expected to reduce costs incurred by cross-chain transfer services due to capital occupation. Research by the Ethereum Foundation shows that as finality delays decrease, the pending reimbursement funds for related services will significantly decline.
