On October 1, the National Key Laboratory of Cryogenic Science and Technology, housed within the Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, made a groundbreaking proposal. For the first time, they introduced a strategy that employs alternating current (AC) as an alternative to the conventional direct current (DC) for driving direct seawater electrolysis aimed at hydrogen production. This approach facilitates on-site hydrogen generation from offshore power sources and effectively tackles the precipitation challenges inherent in seawater electrolysis for hydrogen production right at the source. This novel technology obviates the necessity for seawater pretreatment and ion exchange membranes, thereby diminishing both the cost of hydrogen production and the complexity of the system. It can be seamlessly integrated with offshore renewable energy power generation systems, providing a cost-effective and sustainable supply of green hydrogen for the upstream sector of the hydrogen energy industry chain. Furthermore, by integrating with ethylene glycol oxidation reactions, this strategy enables the co-production of high-value-added glycolic acid alongside hydrogen generation, achieving 'dual benefits from a single electricity source' and further boosting economic efficiency.
