The ‘Big Four’—comprising Fanuc, Yaskawa Electric, ABB, and Kuka—once held sway over China’s industrial robot market, boasting a combined market share that surpassed 60% at their zenith. However, their preeminent status is now under formidable threat from homegrown rivals. In the opening quarter of this year, domestic brands secured a 55% market share, outstripping foreign counterparts in shipment volume for the inaugural time. Prominent domestic players like Estun and Inovance Technology have witnessed substantial market share growth. In specialized niches, the penetration rate of domestically produced goods has surged, with certain sectors now under the dominance of Chinese firms. Moreover, domestic manufacturers are exhibiting robust financial health.

Among the foreign contingent, performance has been a mixed bag: Fanuc has reported global revenue growth but a contraction in its Chinese market share; Yaskawa Electric has seen revenue climb without a commensurate rise in profits; and ABB is contemplating the divestiture of its robotics division. The erosion of the ‘Big Four’s’ market share is largely attributable to the narrowing technology chasm with domestic producers. The caliber of core components from Chinese players now nears international benchmarks, albeit at a reduced cost. Domestic robot prices and upkeep expenses are both inferior to those of foreign brands, yielding shorter investment payback periods.

Nevertheless, the ‘Big Four’ retain entrenched strengths and continue to reign supreme in the global arena, wielding significant advantages in high-end domains such as automotive manufacturing and semiconductors. Their offline simulation software has amassed a vast repository of process packages, fostering formidable ecosystem loyalty. Confronted with the advent of embodied artificial intelligence, they are opting to amalgamate AI capabilities with their seasoned industrial robotic arms to safeguard their core operations. In the near term, the competitive landscape remains too evenly poised to predict a clear victor.
