On September 3rd (local time in the United States), it was reported that a patient with kidney disease, who had undergone a genetically modified pig kidney transplant, has survived for 285 days without the need for dialysis. This achievement sets a new survival benchmark for human recipients of pig kidney transplants. Previously, a similar patient managed to survive for 271 days before successfully receiving a human kidney transplant. This development indicates that genetically modified pig kidneys have the potential to act as 'bridge' organs, sustaining the lives of patients on the kidney transplant waiting list and alleviating the dialysis burden until a suitable human kidney becomes accessible.
