At the 2026 Nuclear Fusion Energy Conference and Nuclear Fusion Activity Week, China Fusion Energy Co., Ltd. revealed fresh advancements in the construction of its first significant fusion science facility in Shanghai—the China HL-4, following its establishment in the city. The company has forged a partnership with eight other organizations to create the Yangtze River Delta Innovation Consortium, which is dedicated to developing 25T high-temperature superconducting magnet technology. Their goal is to set up the inaugural research, development, and testing line by 2028 and finalize the prototype magnet's development by 2030. As the inaugural high-temperature superconducting strong-field steady-state burning fusion experimental platform globally, China HL-4 will shoulder the crucial responsibility of verifying the reliability of 25T high-temperature superconducting strong-field magnets. Founded in Shanghai in July 2025, China Fusion is predominantly owned by the China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) and follows a compact magnetic confinement fusion technology route. This approach notably diminishes the size of fusion reactors and expedites the commercialization timeline. Moreover, China HL-3, an advanced magnetic confinement tokamak device developed domestically, has attained numerous internationally leading achievements.
