The e-commerce competitive landscape in Southeast Asia is undergoing a transformation, moving away from an emphasis on low prices and high parcel volumes towards a more differentiated approach. Lazada is ramping up its efforts in the brand e-commerce sector, with a particular focus on brand merchants and quality-conscious consumer segments. Through brand marketing and other strategic models, the company aims to refine its profit structure and scale back investment in low-quality products. Presently, there remains significant potential for growth in e-commerce penetration and the share of online branded goods in Southeast Asia. The trend towards consumer segmentation has paved the way for differentiated development opportunities within brand e-commerce. To address the pain points encountered by cross-border brands, such as high trial-and-error costs and operational complexities, Lazada has introduced three global expansion models. Among these, the 'One-Click Light Go-Global' initiative, launched in September 2025, simplifies cross-border operations through system integration and platform management. This plan has already drawn in nearly 10,000 Tmall merchants, with monthly transaction volumes surpassing 400 million yuan as of June this year, aiding brands like MobiGarden in achieving growth. Nevertheless, this model still grapples with the challenge of not being able to fully substitute for long-term localized operations by brands. Lazada must validate the enduring operational capabilities of merchants using the light go-global approach to capitalize on the consumption upgrade trends in Southeast Asia and translate them into its own growth engine.
