Peter Beck, founder of New Zealand-based aerospace company Rocket Lab, announced that the company has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Iridium, a U.S.-listed satellite communications service provider, for $8 billion. This move marks Rocket Lab's formal entry into the satellite communications services sector, expanding its business scope from rocket launches and aerospace system manufacturing to satellite communications services. By integrating Iridium's Low Earth Orbit network and spectrum resources, Rocket Lab will accelerate the construction of its autonomous satellite communications system, reducing the business advancement timeline by 10 to 20 years and lowering future constellation upgrade and maintenance costs. This acquisition will intensify competition in the global low-Earth orbit satellite internet sector and drive a reshaping of the industry landscape.
