On June 12, Bloomberg broke the news that Alibaba Group is set to acquire Pupu Supermarket, a Chinese platform specializing in fresh food delivery, with a bid of $1.5 billion. This strategic move is aimed at vying with Meituan for a larger slice of the online retail market pie, a decision that has the potential to ignite a fierce bidding war. Citing insiders with knowledge of the situation, Alibaba's offer significantly surpasses the previous bid from Sun Art Retail, which had proposed to acquire Pupu Supermarket for $600 million. At present, Alibaba, Meituan, and JD.com are all ramping up their investments and operations in the local commerce and fresh food delivery sectors, intensifying competition in these areas.
