SpaceX has completed fueling its new-version Starship super-heavy rocket for the first time, with a launch potentially occurring as early as this week. Over the weekend, SpaceX finished assembling the third-generation Starship, setting a new global height record for rockets. On May 11, SpaceX conducted a launch rehearsal, loading over 5,000 metric tons of propellant into the third-generation Starship and its Super Heavy booster for the first time. The Starship has already undergone 11 test flights, and the upcoming 12th test flight will mark the debut of the third-generation model, holding significant importance for both SpaceX and NASA. NASA has selected the Starship as one of the manned landers for its Artemis lunar exploration program. The Artemis 3 mission is set to conduct rendezvous and docking technology demonstrations as early as next year, while the Artemis 4 mission plans to send astronauts to the lunar south pole by late 2028 at the earliest. The 12th test flight of the Starship could take place as soon as May 15, but even if successful, full operational deployment of the Starship will still require overcoming multiple technical challenges.
