Microsoft is set to gradually phase out the traditional File Explorer properties dialog in Windows 11, a feature that has been part of the system since the Windows 95 days. It will be replaced by a contemporary interface built on WinUI 3. This move is driven by Microsoft's commitment to enhancing system performance and stability. Although Windows 11 has embraced visual uniformity and modernization through frameworks like WebView2, a closer look at the system uncovers numerous legacy interfaces, with the File Explorer properties window being a prime example.

Presently, File Explorer is constructed on the outdated Win32 framework, overlaid with modern XAML and WinUI components. This mixed architecture often results in sluggish software operation and occasional white screen flickering during page transitions. Microsoft is systematically eliminating these legacy elements, with plans to undertake a comprehensive low-level architecture upgrade for File Explorer throughout 2026. This upgrade will incorporate more WinUI 3 interface components to boost performance.

The revamped properties dialog, reconstructed with WinUI 3, will address the persistent issue of lacking dark mode support and introduce a sleek, refined modern design. At present, the new properties dialog is tucked away deep within the system code of the preview version, with all related resource files fully set up. It is anticipated to be released to the Windows Insider testing channel later this year.
