On April 9, 2026, news broke that open-source behemoth Red Hat was set to lay off the entirety of its China-based R&D team. This development was subsequently corroborated by an email from Red Hat's CTO and Senior Vice President of Global Engineering. The email clarified that, as part of its overarching global site selection strategy, Red Hat has decided to wind down its engineering operations in China. Consequently, the relevant work will be reassigned to its Asia-Pacific engineering hub.
From the moment this announcement was made, the affected employees were relieved of their daily work duties. Their employment contracts are slated to terminate on July 31, 2026. Currently, Red Hat Greater China boasts a workforce of over 700 individuals, with more than 500 of them serving in R&D and service teams.
