Recently, a collaborative effort among leading European technology firms—including Nextcloud, Ionos, and Proton—has culminated in the launch of Euro-Office, a new open-source office suite. This initiative aims to challenge Microsoft Office’s longstanding dominance in the office software market, while also marking a significant stride by Europe in fostering digital sovereignty and diminishing its dependence on U.S.-based technology. Euro-Office is built upon the codebase of the renowned open-source project OnlyOffice, offering a comprehensive suite of features such as word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, and PDF editing. Notably, it is designed to be compatible with both Microsoft formats and open standards, ensuring seamless interoperability for users. At present, a preview version of Euro-Office is accessible on GitHub, with the highly anticipated official 1.0 version slated for release this summer.
