Recently, Dolby Laboratories filed a lawsuit in the United States District Court for the District of Delaware, accusing Snap's app Snapchat of infringing on four of its video compression patents when using HEVC and AV1 video codec technologies. In the complaint, Dolby pointed out that although AV1 is regarded by the industry as a royalty-free coding solution that can avoid the high patent fees and litigation risks associated with HEVC, its actual implementation heavily incorporates Dolby's proprietary technologies, which were previously applied to HEVC and have never been licensed for royalty-free use.
