German researchers published a report in the journal Communications Earth & Environment, stating that on February 19, 2025, a portion of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket broke apart during its re-entry into the atmosphere at an altitude close to 100 kilometers above the west coast of Ireland. This event led to a 10-fold increase in the concentration of lithium atoms in the upper atmosphere. This marks the inaugural instance where scientists have directly measured environmental pollution resulting from space debris descending into the atmosphere. The findings are of great significance for evaluating the environmental repercussions of space activities.
