The research team, headed by Professor Li Hua Gan and Professor Ming Xian Liu at Tongji University’s College of Chemical Science and Engineering, has been deeply engaged in the exploration of efficient energy storage materials and their utilization in the realm of novel energy batteries. Lately, the team has successfully engineered a cathode material based on a low HOMO/LUMO donor-acceptor trithienyl-tricyanide covalent organic framework (COFs). This material enables the alternating coordination of CF3SO3/NH4+ counterions with minimal reaction energy barriers, unveiling a cooperative redox charge storage mechanism between the p-type trithienyl and n-type tricyanide units. This breakthrough effectively tackles the existing challenge of achieving a balance between high specific capacity and voltage platform in COFs materials, leading to the successful development of a zinc-organic battery that boasts both high energy density and extended cycle life.
