Brazil’s antitrust watchdog, the Administrative Council for Economic Defense (CADE), has initiated an investigation into Microsoft, alleging that the company indirectly compelled certain original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to exclusively bundle its Edge browser. CADE has dispatched letters to ten computer makers, including Dell, questioning their involvement in Microsoft’s ‘Jumpstart’ initiative, which involves the exclusive pre-installation of the Edge browser on Windows-based PCs. The authority has also requested these manufacturers to furnish pertinent sales data.

Simultaneously, CADE has demanded that Microsoft divulge the specifics of its contracts, with a particular focus on ascertaining whether any penalties are imposed and whether there is scope for negotiation. The ‘Browser Choice Coalition’ has voiced its support for this investigation, viewing it as a crucial step in combating monopolistic practices and fostering fair competition in the market.
