On February 10, local time on Sunday, Musk posted on X platform that SpaceX has shifted its near-term focus from Mars to the Moon, with plans to build “self-growing cities” on the lunar surface. He stated that this goal could be achieved in less than 10 years, while Mars missions would take over 20 years. Musk explained that Mars missions are constrained by planetary alignment cycles, with launch windows occurring only every 26 months and requiring a 6-month journey, whereas lunar missions can launch every 10 days with a travel time of just 2 days, enabling faster iteration in building lunar cities. This shift marks a significant change from Musk’s previous stance of prioritizing Mars as SpaceX’s primary destination. Last year, Musk had also indicated that the company planned to launch an unmanned Mars mission by the end of 2026.
