On January 27 (local time), Andrius Kubilius, the European Union's Commissioner for Space Affairs, announced in Brussels that the EU had initiated its government satellite communication plan the previous week. This initiative is designed to amalgamate the communication capabilities of satellites operated by the governments of the 27 member states. Its primary goal is to diminish reliance on external suppliers and safeguard the continuity of vital services. Under this plan, member governments can lease secure communication services from one another for a range of purposes, including emergency response, law enforcement, and military operations. Additionally, this plan lays the groundwork for the EU's forthcoming third satellite communication constellation, known as IRIS2. The IRIS2 project envisions the deployment of over 280 satellites to deliver secure communication services, with the inaugural batch of services slated for launch in 2029.
