On January 17, Business Insider reported that Elon Musk got into a heated public dispute with Michael O’Leary, the CEO of Ryanair—Europe’s largest airline—over the adoption of Starlink, even publicly demanding O’Leary’s dismissal. The clash came after Ryanair declined to implement Starlink services across its aircraft fleet. O’Leary argued that installing antennas on aircraft cabins would drive up fuel costs, estimating that introducing the service would add between $200 million and $250 million annually to the airline’s operating expenses. He also noted that passengers were unwilling to pay for Wi-Fi on short-haul flights.

Musk fired back, claiming O’Leary was “misinformed” and questioning Ryanair’s calculations regarding fuel consumption impacts. In response, O’Leary, in an interview, described Musk as having “no clue” about the aviation industry and called him a “moron.”

Musk didn’t hold back on social media, labeling O’Leary a “big idiot” and suggesting that users should “just buy Ryanair and fire him.”

Currently, several airlines are adopting Starlink. Lufthansa has announced plans to introduce the service, and SAS has successfully completed its first flight equipped with Starlink.
