The pervasive use of electronic warfare technologies has heightened the susceptibility of GPS signals to both interference and spoofing. To address this challenge, the US Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) has launched a worldwide 'Geomagnetic Navigation (MagNav)' mapping project. The initiative is designed to create a dependable, jam-resistant navigation system by harnessing the Earth's intrinsic magnetic field, thus diminishing reliance on GPS. The system will employ high-precision magnetometers to identify fluctuations in the Earth's magnetic field, correlating these readings with pre-existing geomagnetic maps to achieve pinpoint accuracy in location determination. The DIU is currently inviting industry partners to contribute to the development of a prototype magnetic data collection platform, tailored to fulfill the precise navigation requirements that extend beyond the capabilities of GPS.
