On January 10, 2026, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) officially declared its approval of Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (commonly known as SpaceX)'s request to launch an extra 7,500 second-generation “Starlink” satellites. With this addition, the total number of SpaceX's satellites orbiting the Earth will soar to 15,000. Moreover, the FCC has also sanctioned SpaceX's technical enhancements for these satellites, enabling their operation across five distinct frequency bands. Additionally, it has lifted the prior constraint that prohibited overlapping signal coverage among satellites. The deployment of these additional satellites is set to significantly bolster network coverage not only across the United States but also in far-flung regions. Furthermore, they will pave the way for next-generation 5G communication services and facilitate internet speeds reaching up to an impressive 1 gigabit per second.
